Florence Nightingale's famed coxcomb graph, a forerunner of the modern pie chart, was used to depict mortality data from the Crimean War. Complete graph and explanation. Born May 12, 1820, "Nightingale was just one of those brilliant, multi-faceted people, and she showed a pension for statistics early on.

The text in the lower left corner reads: The graphic, which Nightingale used as a way to explain complex statistics simply, clearly, and persuasively, has become known as Nightingale's "Rose Diagram." Going back to the post 8 Ways You Can Visualise Proportions, I provided a WAY 8 using the Nightingale rose graph – or the polar area diagram to visualise proportions, and this is a follow-up on WAY 8 from that post. The Nightingale rose graph was a diagram by Florence Nightingale (1820 – 1910). However, it’s also about some of the choices Nightingale made in producing the graph for her purposes.

By 1856, Florence Nightingale had transformed hospital care in the Crimean War—her next step was to use statistics to convince the British army and government of the need for widespread reform. Today, we are used to seeing statistics presented in graphical form. Infographics are common in newspapers, magazines and online.

In 1858 Nurse Florence Nightingale used data visualisation to create a graph which clearly exposed the causes of death in the East Army. The graph illuminated previously unconsidered information, proving the true threat to soldiers in the East Army was disease, of which they died from 32 times more than battle wounds.
